Bidding sites and forums are good sources of work, as are recommendations from other writers or writing for someone who has a work overload. I have had all these types of writing over the last two and a half years, I've also written a couple of guest posts for other people's blogs.

I also try to write for a specific audience in my blogs i.e. those interested in writing just like you, and I write research reports for community organisations and universities. Who do you write for?

 Comments

Get Paid to Write Web Content

There are some very busy webmasters out there, so busy in fact that they don't have the time to write their own web content and are looking to pay someone else to do it for them. If you can write clear, grammatical English then you might want to give writing for the web a try.

Where to Find Work

If you are just starting out by testing the freelance web writing waters then you might want to try a bidding site like Get a Freelancer or Scriptlance - both of which are free to join. When you have signed up and added a portfolio or links to your blog (examples of your writing for buyers) then you can start bidding on projects. Some of the jobs on these sites are very badly paid so make sure that you are bidding an amount you feel comfortable with. Most of these bidding sites are American and pay in dollars so it is best to get yourself a paypal account, just sign up for an account and you are set to go.

Another way of finding getting paid to write web content is to find a couple of websits that you like and where you think they might benefit from having some content written. Write a clear and concise email saying why you are contacting them and what you can offer. Quite a number of writers will recommend this as a way of getting writing work. Do you have any other ideas on where to find work?

 Comments

Freelancing and Article Directories

Promoting Your Site

One way of promoting your website and making your work known is to write for article directories. When you write and article and submit it to an article directory such as Ezine Articles then you are allowed to leave a link to your site in the resource box. have found that doing this has brought a lot more visitors to their site and increased their page ranking with Google. For one particular writer this also resulted in a huge increase in her adsense earnings.

Showcasing Your Writing

Article directories are also a good way for freelancers to showcase their writing, what is more they can serve as part of your writing portfolio, just give potential clients a link to your work and see what happens.

Writing for article directories is good practice for freelancers, if you are going to be writing on a number of different subjects then you might as well start now and work on your writing style. Most of the freelancers that I know swear by the article directory method of promoting your writing and your website and making a bit of extra passive income at the same time.

Whenever and whatever a writer may be dealing with they should always keep their audience in mind - this is especially the case when you are writing in an interactive medium such as the web. There is an art to writing articles for the web; or so I have discovered. Use simple language and short paragraphs wherever possible. Many web masters also want a number of sub-headings in their articles and these work well when you are writing for the web. Using sub headings is also a good idea in your own blog posts. It helps the reader to follow your argument and hopefully to engage with text enough to leave you a comment.

Sub Headings

Sub headings signal your intention to introduce more material. They are also a good way of giving lazy readers some idea of what the article is about. As a blogger you will no doubt be conscious of search engines and optimizing your content - search engines like sub headings and they tend to read them which means they get more of your content. These headings are also helpful if you want to rewrite the article at some point.

Article Structure

Once you find a structure that suits you and your writing style try to stick to it as often as possible.Think of a catchy title that will make your readers want more and then add your sub headings. Sub headings and a considered structure makes it much easier to rewrite an article should the need arise. Some writers say that they will make several different versions for submitting to article directories and selling on writers' forums that deal in content creation.

Some of the top bloggers recommend that rather than finishing your blog articles too neatly you should leave room for posing a question as this can encourage readers to comment, and comments can make your blog more popular and increase your blog traffic. I have certainly started using this tactic over at my other blog, I'll let you know whether it does inspire more comments or whether I need to improve my blog articles in other ways.

 Comments

Webwriter's New Blog

I decided that it was time that I had a paid blog which was dedicated to writing for the web as most of my other blogs are about nal">freelancing in general or about writing and research.

Freelance Web Writing

Freelance web writing is a rapidly growing sector as more business owners have neither the time nor the expertise to write their own copy. While I do write stuff that is not intended for the we, most of my freelance writing falls under that heading. There is a lot of scope for freelancing in this way providing you write decent English and have a fairly quick turnaround time. As a general rule I try to make sure that I keep to any deadlines that clients set.

During the Christmas period and immediately after however, I was extremely stressed for reasons I will not mention here and some of my work was late - in fact I lost one good client altogether. It was a pity because we had a good working relationship and he was a prompt payer, but he needed to know exactly what the status of the work was, and this is where I let him down.

I have had to put this down to experience and try to avoid taking on work when I know things are getting me down or I am ill.

One thing that is absolutely vital when writing for the web; try to ensure that your post is clear and has no glaring spelling or grammatical errors as this is a common complaint about web writers. Make sure your content is interesting, informative, and as well written as you can make it.

How Much Can I Earn?

No doubt you are wondering how much you can earn writing for the web. Generally speaking the rates are a lot lower than they might be for other freelancing gigs. If you work hard and develop relationships with your clients then you can begin to charge a reasonable rate for your work - many people, myself included started out writing for $0.01 cent a word and I will still take on these jobs when times are slow. A lot of the gigs are for US publishers which means that the rate is actually lower for UK writers because of the status of the dollar against the pound.
